Westport Firefighter / Paramedics
Updated On: Mar 02, 2016

The Westport Permanent Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 1802 was organized September 25, 1968. We are an organization of 21 full-time professional Firefighter/ EMT's protecting the coastal Town of Westport, Massachusetts.

We strive to bring the citizens and visitors of Westport the best Fire Protection and Emergency Medical Services available. This is consistently accomplished through our pursuit of up to date education and training. We are confident that  the many services we provide are nothing short of superior.

Every Westport Firefighter is cross trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), 17 of which are trained to the Paramedic Level (EMT-P). This enables all 4 Groups (shifts) to provide BOTH FIRE PROTECTION AND EMS at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level to the community. 2 of our Firefighter/ Paramedics are also certified Registered Nurses.  Shifts are a minimum of 4 members to a maximum of 5, split between 2 stations in the north and south end of town. At times we rely on off-duty members and mutual depending on the size and scope of the incident.

We have 3 FF/Medics trained as Haz-Mat technicians, Capt. Martin being the team leader, was also selected to serve as a Haz-Mat Tech for the State of Massachusetts, an elite team of Haz-Mat Techs serving the Commonwealth. Firefighter/ Paramedic Tony Ward has been selected to serve on Bristol County's tech rescue team, a highly trained group serving the county and beyond for rescue's that many fire departments do not have the training or equipment to handle.

We are proud of our members accomplishments, in depth training, education, certifications, and their strong commitment to excellence when serving our community. Westport is in fact "our community" as each of our members resides in town.

Westport has a population of roughly 15,000 year round residents, which increases to around 25,000 in the summer months. Our response area is 64 square miles. Included in those 64 square miles is 35 miles of coastline made up of ponds, rivers, and an ocean.

Westport Firefighters work around the clock manning the following apparatus:

  • 3 Advanced Life Support Ambulances (3rd manned when both are on calls)
  • 1 Ladder Truck
  • 1Tanker/pumper
  • 3 Engines
  • 2 Forestry Trucks
  • 1 Special Operations Unit
  • 1 Haz-mat Unit
  • 2 Marine Vessels
  • 2 Rescue Jet Skis
  • 2 Fire Stations
  • Various EMA units
